揚基歌又叫揚基曲、揚基小調、揚基嘟嘚兒。曲調具有壹定的蘇格蘭民歌色彩。現在也是美國的愛國歌曲，同時也是康涅狄格州州歌。
早在美國革命以前，在這些英國殖民地上《揚基歌》的曲調和歌詞的某些段落就已經很流行。甚至在十八世紀七十年代以前，英軍就曾唱《揚基歌》來嘲笑美國的大陸軍。歌詞的早期版本是嘲笑這些殖民地居民的勇氣以及他們粗俗的衣著和舉止。當時英軍被迫向大陸軍投降，但是心中不服氣。軍官下令軍樂隊演奏《揚基歌》來羞辱前來受降的大陸軍。當時大陸軍總司令華盛頓將軍為了更加羞辱英國人，曾經把這首歌曲作為大陸軍的軍歌，“揚基”是對新英格蘭土包子的輕蔑之詞，而“嘟得兒”（也可以讀為都達爾）的意思即蠢貨或傻瓜。然而，在美國革命期間，美軍卻采用《揚基歌》作為他們自己的歌，以表明他們對自己樸素，家紡的衣著和毫不矯揉造作的舉止感到自豪。歌詞有許多不同版本。多年來，這首歌壹直被當作非正式的第二國歌（公認的美國第二國歌應該是《美麗的亞美利加》，也就是當年尼克松訪問中國周總理親自安排在機場演奏的樂曲），而且是人們最喜歡的兒歌，在許多電影，電視，動畫中出現。
