1988年7月，26歲的Mark Calloway無意中迷上了摔角比賽，當他發現自己對摔角的迷戀已經無法自拔的時候，Mark Calloway放棄了原本穩定的工作，做出了 他壹生中最大的壹個決定-------成為壹名摔角選手.正是Mark Calloway這壹個決定,創造出了摔角界的壹段偉大的傳奇.Mark Calloway找到了壹個摔角訓練營開始了訓練.5月之後,原本就具備壹副摔角手體型的Mark Calloway離開了摔角訓練營,1989年1月開始了自己的職業摔角生涯.Mark Calloway的第壹站USWA,他的名字叫做masked Texas Red,他的角色本是壹個肉角,任人欺侮.但Mark Calloway很快憑著自己在摔角方面的天賦迅速引起了USWA高層的註意.開始了對他的重用.USWA在Mark Calloway加入了新的元素----經濟人Skandor Akbar,並且角色改名叫the Master of Pain.這個角色逐漸被大家認可,並迅速走紅.1989年3月,the Master of Pain得到了和Jerry Lawler對決的機會.在1989年4月,兩人結束了短暫的劇情擊敗Jerry Lawler得到USWA Unified World Title.剛剛加入摔角界4個月的Mark Calloway,迎來了自己的第壹個冠軍.得到冠軍後,the Master of Pain改名為The Punisher.但冠軍並沒有持續多久,就被Jerry Lawler重新拿回.但這段經歷卻使壹些大聯盟都註意到了Mark Calloway.1989年10月The Punisher成為了USWA Texas Heavyweight title,但同樣是在不長的時間內又把腰帶輸給了Kerry von Erich.1989年11月,Mark Calloway轉戰WCW,以"Mean" Mark Callous的身份出現,不久就跟DanSpivey ,Sid Vicious搭檔組成團隊The SkyscrapersThe Skyscrapers的戰績不錯,當時主要的對手就是摔角史最偉大的雙打組合之壹的Road Warriors,然而Skyscrapers並沒有給人留下深刻的印象.但這時候恰逢Sid Vicious受傷.使得"Mean" Mark Callous走向了單打之路,打敗了Johnny Ace和Brian Pillman等對手,而迅速在WCW走紅.之後和Lex Luger為United States title展開了爭奪.1990年的Great American Bash,Lex Luger成功的打敗"Mean" Mark Callous衛冕了腰帶."Mean" Mark Callous覺的有些不滿,這時候,他職業生涯的轉機出現了,WWF向他拋出了橄欖枝,與WCW合同還有壹個月就要到期的Mark Calloway立即做出了自己的決定-----轉戰WWF.1990年的10月,WWF的名經濟人Brother Love在HOUSE SHOW中出帶來了壹位叫"Kane the Undertaker"的選手,這名選手立即就被WWF高層重視起來.僅僅三周,WWF就對他重新包裝,並且讓他加入了的Ted Debiase的Million $ team(百萬俱樂部).
