由於文化上的差異，英語中的“dog”壹詞與漢語的“狗”在某些方
意義迥然不同。英語裏的“dog”可指男人、小夥子、家夥等。例如：
a lazy dog 懶漢；a luck dog 幸運兒；a dump dog 沈默 寡言的人； a sick dog 病重的人；a jolly dog 快活的人。 而漢語裏凡與“狗”有關的詞、成語等都幾乎含有貶義，如“走狗”、
“狗奴才”、“狗仗人勢”、“狗眼看人低”等等。英語中有關“dog” 的諺語為數不少，其寓意也相當深刻。有些諺語中雖然都有“dog”壹詞，
卻全然沒有“狗”的意思。例如：

當然，有些含“dog”壹詞的諺語譯成漢語時亦可直譯出“狗”來，但其
真正含意是不言自明的。例如：
⒈ Dogs gnow bones because they cannot swallow them.狗啃 骨頭是因為不能將其吞下。
⒉ An old dog does not bark in vain. 老狗不亂吠。 ⒊ A barking dog is better than a sleeping lion.吠犬勝於睡獅。
⒋ In erery country dogs bite. 世上無不吠之犬。
英語中也還有與漢語相似的，關於“dog”的表達方法。例如： treat sb. like a dog待人如豬狗；die a dog"s death可恥地死去；
dog-eat-dog 狗咬狗；running-dog 走狗。
